We’re here for Edinburgh’s dogs and cats, and we always have been.

Our love for animals has been baked into our foundation from the very beginning when founder, William Chambers, helped Edinburgh’s most famous dog, Greyfriar’s Bobby, secure his freedom.

In 1867, Chambers personally paid for Greyfriar’s Bobby’s dog license, declaring Bobby to be his own owner and ensuring that he would always be safe to roam the kirkyard as he wished.

Since those early days, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has been a protector and a champion of Edinburgh’s pets.

Today, we provide expert care for dogs and cats in need, helping families through community support and matching pets with loving homes.

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t exist, but for as long as we’re needed, we’ll be here providing support and advice to pets and their owners in Edinburgh and beyond.

We believe that every dog and cat deserves the best life they can possibly have, and we empower pet owners to give them just that.

  • Dog owners can hire one of our paddocks for as little as £6 an hour, providing a safe and secure space for any dog to run free and sniff to their heart’s desire.
  • Proactive pet owners can attend one of our education courses and learn how to provide lifesaving first aid in an emergency or better understand what their dog is trying to tell them.
  • Many worried owners are reunited with their missing pets every month as our team does everything they can to find and contact the families of every animal who comes to us.
  • Our pet foodbanks feed hundreds of hungry pets each week, helping to keep loving homes whole and relieve some of the strain their owners may be facing.
  • And at the core of it all, we work tirelessly to provide any animal who comes to us with the care, attention, and love they need to find their happy, forever home.

Because every animal deserves the best.

We’re Edinburgh’s Home, will you join us?

Haggis' Happy Ending

Haggis is a young border collie who came to us when his previous family were no longer able to cope with his care. Haggis was nervous of cars and traffic, and struggling in the kennel environment, so we needed to find him a relaxed, rural home as quickly as possible. Lisa and her partner, Brian, were the perfect match.
