How surrendering a pet works

We understand that giving up a dog or cat is never an easy choice. But sometimes it’s the right one for the welfare of your pet.

We’re here to support you

We’re here to support dogs, cats and pet owners with open doors and open minds. That means we don’t judge anyone who comes looking for our help. We know that sometimes the most compassionate and caring thing you can do is to surrender the pet you love to us.

Before you decide to hand over care of your pet to the Home, make sure you’re completely certain that it’s the right decision for both you and the animal. If you’re having to surrender your pet due to a personal crisis, the following services may be able to assist:

  • PDSA is the UK’s leading vet charity, providing free and low-cost treatment to pets in need
  • Dog’s Trust Freedom project offers dog fostering for people escaping from domestic abuse.
  • Shelter helps people in housing need by providing advice and practical assistance
  • GOV.UK provides information on housing and other benefits
  • Samaritans offer free, 24-hour emotional support to anyone in need

Here’s how it works

1. Call our team on 0131 669 5331 to submit a surrender request.
Unfortunately, due to limited capacity and other factors, we can’t take in every pet who may need our help. Our team will take your details, talk you through your options and get back to you as promptly as we can. It’s important to note that it must be the registered owner who calls and brings the animal in for surrender.
2. Organise a surrender appointment
If we’re able to accept your pet, we’ll give you a call to agree a time to bring them in to our rehoming centre at 26 Seafield Road East, EH15 1EH. Setting up an appointment means that we’re able to give you the time you deserve.
3. Bring your pet in
On the day of your surrender appointment, simply bring your pet in to us at the agreed time. If your dog or cat has any favourite toys, blankets, or other items, it can help them settle in to have these with them in their kennel. At the appointment, there will be a small amount of paperwork to complete and a surrender fee of £20.
