Wilbur's story: This big worrier finds his safe-haven
Wilbur’s fears and his size made it challenging to find the right home for him. He spent 135 days in our care before Emma, James and their dog, Kodee, came along.
Wilbur was terrified of the outside world.
It took Emma and James three weeks to get him out for a walk, but they were determined to do their best for Wilbur. They hired an Animal Behaviourist to understand his phobias.
Kodee also became a source of comfort for Wilbur in his new home, and before too long, the pair were snoozing together and harmonising their howls.
Another source of comfort for Wilbur is his favourite elephant toy, which he brought home with him from the kennels. ‘It’s just a rag now. He loves it. We’ve got balls, teddies, ropes, all sorts, but no, he loves this little piece of fabric the best’.
Today, Wilbur is a lot braver and gaining confidence every day.
Emma and James told us, ‘It’s not been perfectly easy with Wilbur; he is a special dog, but each day we see progress with him.’
Sadly, Kodee passed away a few months ago and is sorely missed by the whole family. Thanks to him, and Emma and James’ love and perseverance, Wilbur has found the happy home he always dreamed of. ‘We absolutely adore him, and he’s not going anywhere.’
You can help more dogs like Wilbur find the peace and safety they deserve.
This winter, we need to raise £200,000 to keep Edinburgh’s dogs and cats protected, fed and warm. Will you help change their story?
