3 Signs that your cat is hiding pain

Cats are adept at hiding their pain. This may have once helped them to avoid predators in the wild, but now mostly it just makes it hard to know when to call the vet.

Here are 3 signs that your cat might be hiding pain.

1. Changes in behaviour

If your cat suddenly starts toileting outside of its litter tray, sleeping significantly more or less than usual, or refusing its food, these could all be indications of pain. Notice if your snoozy cat suddenly becomes very restless or if a cuddly cat suddenly avoids touch. Any behaviour changes are worth paying attention to.

2. Physical symptoms

Physical signs to look out for include swelling of joints, limping, floppiness of their tail or if their third eyelid is showing, as these could all be caused by pain. They may also appear more irritable and vocalise more than usual.

3. Facial expressions

A cat’s facial expression can sometimes betray if they’re not feeling great. Look out for outwardly rotated ears, squinty eyes and tension around the mouth and whiskers.  They may also display changes in their body language, like crouching or lowering their head.
