Kennel Assistant 

Working hours:
Full Time: 40 hours per week (worked on a rota from Monday to Sunday)
Part Time: 24 hours per week (weekend working and 1 day through the week)

Salary: £18,720 per annum (pro rata for part time positions) Salary rising to the Living Wage in April 2020.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home is seeking several passionate individuals with a commitment to animal welfare to join our busy team in Full Time and Part Time positions. We are looking for 1x Part Time Kennel Assistant, 1x Full Time Kennel Assistant and 2x Full Time Dog Board Assistants. 

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has been a safe haven to stray animals since 1883, and still rescues over a thousand lost or abandoned dogs and cats every year.  The Home benefits from skills and experience of our 50+ strong staff, comprised of long-serving kennel and cattery experts and enthusiastic new talent. Our small team is united by the love and dedication towards the animals in our care, and the belief that any dog or cat that comes to our door, whatever the reason, should be safe, warm and well-fed.

As a Kennel Assistant you’ll work to the Home’s code of practice and Health and Safety guidelines, to provide exemplary daily care for the dogs and cats and educate potential new owners and the general public in the care and welfare of their animals, establishing excellent customer relations for the centre.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with the ability to show empathy to both people and animals.  A strong team player, you’ll have lots of energy teamed with a positive upbeat attitude. Experienced in working with or handling animals you’ll be knowledgeable in basic behaviour and health issues and above all committed to the aims and objectives of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home.

Treasurer Trustee

Salary: voluntary – unpaid
Location: Edinburgh

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has been a safe haven for dogs and cats since 1883, and still rescues over a thousand lost or abandoned dogs and cats every year.  The Home benefits from skills and experience of our 70+ strong staff, comprised of long-serving experts and enthusiastic new talent. Our passionate team is united by the love and dedication towards the animals in our care, and the belief that any dog or cat that comes to our door, whatever the reason, should be safe, warm and well-fed.

With an experienced staff team and a highly skilled board of trustees in place the organisation is seeking to appoint a new treasurer. This position forms part of a dedicated team of trustees already in place and would help to strengthen the board and support the organisation into the future.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has an understanding of charity or similar corporate financial governance to join our Board of Trustees; to support the leadership of the charity, drive forward the organisational strategy and bring a solid networking background that can help our aims.

What you will bring:

  • Qualified Accountant (ICAS/ICAEW/ACCA/CIMA/CIPA)
  • A strong understanding and experience of finance department operations, preferably with some charity experience
  • Strong communication and influencing skills at a senior level
  • Excellent networking, collaboration and engagement skills
  • Ability to think and work strategically
  • A forward thinking and positive approach to the work of the Home

A Living Wage Employer

In 2019 Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home became a living wage employer, Scotland’s first Animal Welfare organisation to take this prestigious title. The Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, regardless of whether they are direct employees or third-party contracted staff, receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.00. This rate is significantly higher than the statutory minimum for over 25s of £8.21 per hour.

Since joining the scheme the Home has picked up Best Newcomer at the 2019 Living Wage Awards, recognising its commitment to its staff  and their understanding that happy people mean happy animals.
