Brave Bertie's story: A (not so) quiet retirement home
Bertie was a very nervous boy, often hiding away at the back of his pen. We knew he was going to need an experienced and patient family. When they applied to rehome him, Isobel and her husband made the perfect match.
Isobel had recently retired and this pair of animal-lovers with 20 years of cat ownership experience were looking to offer a ‘quiet retirement home’ to an older cat.
‘We noticed that the younger cats and The ones that are good with children or other pets get picked quite quickly, which is really nice to see. But then there’s always the older cats, who kind of get left by the wayside… We thought we could give a really good retirement home for a cat who was a bit harder to place.’
Isobel remembers visiting Bertie for the first time
‘I went to go and visit him, and it was just like I expected, all the other young cats had their paws up at the windows going, ‘hello, hello’. And poor wee Bertie was hiding under the blankets on his cat tower. He just melted my heart.’
They were ready to take on a timid, older cat, but much to their surprise, Bertie is a lot braver than anyone expected!
From the very first day, Brave Bertie has loved exploring his new home. Isobel tells us he ‘jumps about like a kitten ’ playing with all his toys. He’s not quite sitting on their laps yet, but Bertie will happily cosy in for a nap on the same chair.
Brave Bertie is settling in well to his forever home
Isobel and her husband have enjoyed getting to know all his quirks. He insists on mixing his wet and dry food, carrying mouthfuls of wet food over to his dry food bowl before eating, and he loves to ‘go fishing’ in Isobel’s big handbag.
Brave Bertie is thriving in his new home, and Isobel and her husband love their new tenant. They share that ‘it’s nice to come home to a cat snoring on the sofa again.’
