What information should I put on my dog’s ID tag?
Read on to find out the advice we share with our rehomers.
Legal requirements
Just as dog owners have a legal responsibility to have their dog microchipped, your dog must always wear a collar with the required information when in public.
This is part of the Control of Dogs Order 1992 and failure to comply can potentially result in heavy fines.
By law, your dog’s ID tag must include:
- Owner’s name
- Owner’s address (with postcode)
Should you include anything else on a dog’s ID tag?
We recommend that you also include your phone number on your dog’s tag as this can make it a lot easier for someone to contact you if they find your missing dog!
Some people choose to add their dog’s name as well, however others suggest that doing so could make it easier for someone to steal your dog.
As long as you include the required information, anything else is up to you.
Top tip – Add your dog’s info to your iPhone’s Medical ID
If you have an iPhone, you can add contact details and any other key information to a Medical ID which is accessible via your lock screen in an emergency.
If you live alone with your pet, it’s a good idea to add a note saying, ‘My dog is probably home alone right now’ and add a contact number for someone trusted who can go and help your pet.
This is just an added level of assurance that your dog won’t be forgotten if the worst were to happen!
