Education

We’ve worked closely with our local community since 1883 to give dogs and cats a better life – and we’re still going on and on and on! We’re always keen to share pet welfare advice when we can, which is why we launched our first Education Outreach Programme in 2018.

Animal Welfare Education

Animal Welfare Education

This programme promotes responsible pet ownership and offers advice on how to make the life of your dog or cat happier and healthier. We work closely with schools, businesses, clubs, and local groups across Edinburgh and the Lothians to share our knowledge with anyone who needs or wants it. See below for more information.

Education Talks at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home

Our series of education talks covers everything from workshops on separation anxiety or preparing your home for a new pet, to Q&As from our celebrity Animal Champions. All events raise much-needed funds for the Home’s vital work.

Schools and Youth Groups

We love teaching the responsibilities of pet ownership to kids across East and Central Scotland and beyond. Many studies show that kids exposed to animal welfare education are more likely to show compassion and empathy towards animals and have less tolerance for animal cruelty.

Our Education Team provides interactive and enlightening workshops for all ages, abilities, and group sizes. We can specifically tailor our workshops to your group but, generally, they include:

● an interactive presentation from the Home’s Education Officer
● engaging group-based activities and games
● practical advice
● an opportunity to ask pet-related questions.

Community Groups and Workplaces

We don’t just educate kids – adults can benefit from our workshops, too! We’ve got lots of experience in teaching adult groups, clubs, and workplaces and you don’t even have to come to the Home – we’ll come to you. We cover a range of engaging topics throughout our workshops, including responsible dog and cat ownership. We can tailor your session to your specific team and needs but, generally, we include:

● an interactive presentation from the Home’s Education Officer
● an in-depth look at the history of the Home
● practical advice on seasonal pet issues, or a topic tailored to your group
● a live Q&A session.
