Donations are incredibly important to Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. As a charity that receives no government or local authority funding monetary donations, sponsorship, fundraising and gift aid are key to meeting our operating costs and keeping the Home running 365 days a year.
Gifts are also always gratefully received. And we are often asked what items can be donated to the Home for the dogs and cats in our care.
As you can imagine we get through a lot of pet food.
We feed the dogs in our care Royal Canin GI or Sensitive. It’s important our dogs have a consistent diet making it easier for us to monitor their health and weight. We supplement their diet with Chappie dog food which is perfect for our fussier residents without causing upset stomachs. Though they do appreciate treats of any kind which are used throughout our training programme.
Any cat owners will know our feline friends can be fussier. Some like dry food, some like one brand, some like another brand. So, we take all types of jelly and dry cat food (no gravy please) and tailor it to each individual’s needs and tastes.
Please note: we cannot accept any opened bags, packets, sachets or tins.
Keeping our residents warm and comfy is incredibly important to us. We are always happy to take clean towels, blankets and throws to use as bedding.
We no longer take duvets or pillows. In an effort to become more sustainable we have decided to stop accepting pillows and duvets. They take up a lot of storage space, it also uses a lot of energy to launder and dry them and often they can only be used once or twice. The disposal of duvets and pillows is also costly to the Home.
Cosy blankets are the best option for our animals and for us to keep our costs and waste levels down. Layering blankets and towels lets us customise bedding for our residents, and our underfloor heating keeps them extra cosy.
Some of our dogs prefer shredded paper for bedding. We are specifically looking for the long strip kind, rather than crosscut, which gets caught in our drains. Can we also ask that all staples are removed. Staples that are left in have the potential to cause serious harm.
We spend a lot of time walking and working on training with all the dogs that come to the Home. So good quality collars, leads, harnesses and dog jackets are always appreciated.
We put a lot of time and effort into enriching the lives of animals while they are with us. Any toys, balls, scratch posts and puzzles feeders are gratefully received.
If you have any, please drop off at the Home, 26 Seafield Road East, Edinburgh, EH15 1EH or use one of the donation stations across the city.
Any food or donations we cannot use for any reason is added to our foodbank to help owners and pets in need.
As always, your donations are very much appreciated. Without your continued support, we’d find it incredibly difficult to look after the dogs and cats at the Home.
