Europe-wide dog walk raises over £6,000 for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home

dog walk teamDog owners and their furry friends from Edinburgh and the Lothians united with thousands of others across six countries last weekend, raising much-needed funds for animals in need.

The Agria Dog Walk 2019 took place on 25 May from Hermes to Helsinki, Oslo to Copenhagen, with the UK hosting events from Edinburgh to Devon. Each event aimed to raise money for local animal rescue centres, with Agria Pet Insurance donating £5 for every dog walked.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home hosted Scotland’s only event, and all money raised will go to helping rescue, reunite and rehome lost, stray and abandoned dogs and cats, providing them with food, shelter and vital veterinary care while they await their forever homes. 158 dogs and 202 humans officially took part in the Edinburgh event, showing overwhelming local support for the cause at this first-time event. Thanks to their participation, in addition to public generosity on the day, over £6,000 was raised for the Home.

The Agria Dog Walk aimed to highlight the positive physical and mental benefits dogs and their owners have on one another, from tackling dog and human obesity, to the significant mental health benefits gained by exercising with your four-legged friend. In total, the event series raised £10,720 for animals in need.

Gillian Graham, Fundraising Manager at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home says: “Our first ever Agria Dog Walk was an incredible success. Despite the typically Scottish weather, and competing with the Scottish cup final, over 200 people made an effort to be there and get involved. There was a real buzz about the day and a lot of fun was had, but more importantly, once again the community has turned up to support us and help dogs and cats who need us the most.

A huge thank you to Agria for choosing Edinburgh to host the first flagship UK event and to everybody for taking part and raising over £6,000 for the Home. We are absolutely delighted with the success of the day and hope to be able to welcome everyone back again next year.”

Simon Wheeler, Managing Director, Agria Pet Insurance, says: Through our partnerships with many of the UK’s rescue organisations, we see how crucial it is for them to raise money to continue the incredible work they do turning around the lives of so many animals without homes. We’re so pleased that the Agria Dog Walk has been such a success and generated these much-needed funds. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible – we had a wonderful day!”

The Edinburgh event was made particularly special by entertainment that included live music, stalls and dog competitions, hosted by Forth One’s Micky Gavin.

Agria are still calling for donations from those unable to attend, which can be allocated to support the hosting rescues. Visit www.agriapet.co.uk/agria-dog-walk and chose Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home to pledge your support.
