Need Help?

The Home has been undertaking door to door fundraising since May 2019 with fundraising agency SMILE Ltd. This type of fundraising is a cost-effective way for the Home to attract some of the £2.7 million income we require to run every year. Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, for the last number of weeks SMILE has put a number of measures in place around their door to door fundraising including social distancing, increased hygiene and not engaging with members of the community who may be vulnerable. We have found that there has been a huge amount of goodwill to the Home whilst fundraising door to door. However, we want to remain a socially responsible organisation and have been carefully following government and professional advice. We have made the decision to pause all door to door and private site fundraising as of Saturday 21 March and will not continue until advice states it would be safe to do so.

The COVID-19 outbreak has had a significant impact on the Home already and we are projecting in excess of £650,000 in financial losses. Now more than ever we need the support of the community to continue our vital work. If you are able to donate, please visit

Door-to-Door and Private Site Fundraising

We are currently working with SMILE Fundraising Ltd, a professional fundraising agency, to carry out a door to door and private site fundraising campaign throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians. This involves us setting up stands in local venues and knocking on doors throughout the area to talk to people about our work and asking them to support the Home with a regular gift.

Why are we doing this?

It costs us around £2.7 million every year to provide our vital care for stray, lost and abandoned dogs and cats. With the absence of any government or statutory funding, individual donations and support from our local community are vital to continue our work. This type of fundraising is a cost effective, low risk method of generating new support for the Home.

How do I know they are genuine fundraisers?

All agency staff will be wearing the Home’s branded uniform and will wear an ID badge. They will also have official Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home literature and will be carrying a tablet, which is used for signing up regular gifts. They will never ask you for a one-off donation or for a donation of cash or cheques.

At the bottom of this page you can check where the team will be fundraising each week. However, if a postcode is not included do not assume that a fundraiser is bogus, as occasionally fundraisers can cross over into the next town or village by mistake. The team can visit up until 9pm during the Summer months and 8.30pm in the Winter months (from October).

If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of a fundraiser please call us on 0131 669 5331 (Monday to Friday, between 9am and 4.30pm) and we will be able to verify this for you. You can also send your questions to
