Coronavirus Information for Customers and Supporters of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home is closely monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We are currently following the World Health Organisation, UK and Scottish Government and NHS Scotland’s advice.

This is a rapidly evolving situation and as official advice changes, we will update our supporters as soon as possible to notify you of any changes to operations and opening hours.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone with a lot of uncertainty. Rest assured we have an emergency contingency plan in place to ensure all animals at the Home receive the food and care they need in the event of a crisis.

Rehoming

Due to the recent government announcement we are complying with restrictions on social interaction and rehoming is now closed. Our lines remain open seven days a week if you wish to enquire about any animals on site or make a donation.

Boarding

If your pet is currently with us, please be assured they are in very safe hands and regardless of the developing situation, they will continue to receive the very best care.

However, we will not be taking on new boarding customers. We are encouraging anyone with a dog or cat currently boarding with us to pick up their pets as soon as possible. The boarding team will be contacting all customers with animals on site to discuss this further, if you have not heard from us please contact the Home in advance so we can talk you through how we will arrange the transfer of your pet.

Pet Foodbank

We know that many people in our community will be struggling financially due to the outbreak. We want to make sure we can help keep pets in happy families wherever possible and for that reason our pet foodbank is currently still operating seven days a week. As we are not open for visitors, please do call our reception team on 0131 669 5331 if you would like to use this service and they will discuss arrangements with you.

Want to Help

Thank you so much for thinking of us during this difficult time. Due to the outbreak we are limiting public access to the site in order to help keep the staff as healthy as possible which also means we cannot have volunteers on site.

Several people have asked about fostering animals. While we really appreciate your support we don’t have a fostering program, but rest assured we have provisions in place to ensure the animals are always looked after.

The best way you could help us right now would be to make a financial donation, if you are able to do so. Due to the outbreak and the cancellation of events and the temporary closure of rehoming and boarding, the Home has sadly experienced a significant drop in donations and income. If you are able to support the Home at this difficult time, we would be most grateful if you are able to make a donation to help us continue our work. You can make a donation here.

Our People

Due to the temporary closure of some of our services, the Home is currently operating with skeleton staffing. This means that a large number of the organisation are currently on furlough and will return when we are able to reopen our services. We have chosen to operate this way to protect both our staff and the future of the Home. In addition, we have asked all our volunteers to take time off from their usual volunteering role and we look forward to welcoming them back when our services reopen and it is safe to do so.

If you are unable to reach a specific member of staff at this time, please call 0131 669 5331 for further assistance with your query.

Thank you for your patience and support during this difficult time.
