Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s unique Christmas countdown

Some very special dogs and cats are helping Edinburgh count down to Christmas this year.

This week, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home launched its #12PetsofChristmas campaign, featuring a dozen animals currently in search of their forever families.

Every day, across the Home’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, a new Christmas-themed dog or cat will be revealed, alongside their Christmas wishlist, featuring items such ‘tennis balls’, ‘catnip’, ‘belly rubs’ and ‘a new best friend’. The campaign can be found on social media through the hashtag #12PetsofChristmas.

The #12PetsofChristmas campaign will highlight how much it costs to care for the hundreds of lost, stray and abandoned dogs and cats who arrive at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home each year, and will link to the current Christmas Appeal, which is seeking donations to assist with these ongoing expenses.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home Fundraising Manager, Gillian Graham said:

“At this time of the year, we reflect on all the animals who we’ve helped rescue, reunite and rehome throughout 2018 and how this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support we receive from our kind supporters.

“December is a busy time in the kennels and cattery (as busy a time as any other month!) and we have many dogs and cats still looking to find their forever homes.

“The #12PetsofChristmas campaign is an opportunity to showcase some of the adorable residents who haven’t yet found their perfect match, and highlight how much difference the gift of a donation will make. It’s a fantastic campaign and we hope the people of Edinburgh and the Lothians will get involved and show their support.”

The #12PetsofChristmas campaign will culminate on 12 December with the aptly-named Star, the Home’s longest-term resident. Having been at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home on and off of around four years — most of his life — it is hoped that this delightful Christmas Star will finally find his forever home.

Is this the UK’s unluckiest dog?

He’s been crowned the nation’s favourite breed and captured the heart of a celebrity, but a staffie called Star may also be the UK’s unluckiest dog.
